Head Coach Nancy Winstel
On pulling out the win…
“
It was a great win. I thought it was a struggle, but they are just so good, and
they are just so experienced. They’re tough. I’ll tell you right
now, they are the best team we’ve played so far in the conference. Bellarmine
was pretty good, but they are just so experienced. They have such a good inside-outside
attack. They can beat you off the dribble. (Carrie Schieve) and (Carrie Weir)
just attack the basket, and Sammy (Kromm) is going to make baskets. We hung in
there, and we didn’t quit.
At the end, I thought our seniors really played. That steal
by Connie (Myers) was huge, and (Elizabeth Burrows) made those two free throws
at the end, and (Karmen Graham) hit the basket that was huge. You’ve
got to make plays to beat anyone that’s good, and I thought when push
came to shove we did. At times we didn’t because we had way too many
turnovers, but we’re going to take it and build on it.”
On the team’s
six blocks…
“
That’s pretty good. We do have some kids that can block it. I think
(Graham), she made a big basket, but I think her defense goes unnoticed sometimes.
I thought
Connie Myers’ defense, if you look where she’s most improved
it’s
her defense. Her defensive play has been really impressive pretty much this
whole year.”
On Sammy Kromm…
“
She’s tough. She had 21 points. She’s really a good player. She makes
the most out of her post ability, and she’s just tough. But, what about
Karmen Graham? People are really relying on Connie and double-teaming Connie,
and (Graham) is starting to figure that out, and she is able to do more things.
It’s nice to have that one-two punch. I think our freshman were a little
overwhelmed today, but that’s ok. It’s a valuable thing, and we’ll
see where that takes them.”
Karmen Graham
On hitting the shot at the end of the game…
“ We just tried to run an offense, and it just ended up that I had the
shot, which I think if I would have turned the other way, I would have
been wide open.”
On the post play…
“ I thought we played pretty well. Our biggest thing was our defense. I
think our defense was way more important than our offense. Connie played
really well defensively
and on offense she took it to the hole.”
Elizabeth Burrows
On the steal at the end of the game…
“
I think at the end of the game, we just knew that it was our game.
Like Connie said, after she missed those two free throws, she knew
she was going to have
to get that steal. I just knew we stepped it up, your adrenaline kicks
in, and I think that makes you more alert. So, I didn’t know
I was going to get it, but it just happened.”
On her two free
throws…
“
Honestly, I wasn’t nervous. Coach called me over and asked
if I needed a timeout, and I told her no, I was fine. I think I just
psyched myself to make
them. So, I think I wasn’t as nervous as coach was.” |
