NKU vs. Southern Indiana (Feb. 3, 2005)

Head Coach Nancy Winstel

On the outcome of the game…
“I’m very disappointed. I thought Southern Indiana came out and got after us in the first half, and we didn’t respond. I don’t think we played very well defensively at all. We threw the ball away too much. Finally, in the second half, we came out and played. We made a game of it. We were actually in control of the game, and we turned the ball over. I’ll be honest with you, we deserved to lose. I hate to say it, but that’s the way we played. We weren’t ready to play. Our kids showed up and got beat by a better team tonight.”

On Sarah Woods’ 22 points…
“I thought she played great. I thought she had a great game. The kid had a great effort and just kept us in the ballgame. You have to give her all the credit in the world.”

On Karmen Graham’s injury…
“She has a sprained ankle, but she’s not the reason we played the way we played. Everyone’s got to be ready to play, and everybody’s got to be focused. Tonight, we weren’t. I was very disappointed in our effort. You have to give Southern Indiana the credit. They beat us.”

On the team’s second half performance…
“We did come back like we needed to. We were up six, but we just gave up too many turnovers and easy shots. We just didn’t do what we had to do at the end to pull it off. We played better, but we didn’t do well enough.”

On Southern Indiana playing a zone and not pressing…
“I guess we were surprised that they didn’t press because that’s what they’ve always done. A lot people have been zoning us lately since we’ve been struggling to shoot.”

On Angela Healy’s play…
“She’s been playing really well lately, especially since Karmen out. She’s getting better. She still needs a lot of experience, but she makes plays and plays good defense, I think.”

On playing without Graham…
“ We miss her a lot, but we should still be able to go without her. She was player of the week two times in a row, and she’s been playing really good defense. Karmen was playing the best she’s played, so we do miss her.”

On the differences Southern Indiana made since the last game…
“I really don’t think it was them. I think it was us. We really didn’t come prepared to play in the first half, so we beat ourselves I guess.”

On playing 36 minutes…
“I was a little tired. I’m not used to that.”

On playing in place of Graham…
“I just want to help the team as much as I can. I know I can’t be (Graham), but I want to do whatever I can to help the team.”

On Southern Indiana playing the zone…
“We really were expecting anything because we beat their press pretty well last time. We weren’t very shocked.”
