NKU vs. SIUE (Dec. 11, 2004)

Head Coach Nancy Winstel

“Our strength is the power of the group. On any given night, anyone can step up and make the play. I thought Nicole Chiodi really did a great job for us. Connie Myers really played well. She is aggressive. I thought Karyn Creager’s two threes were huge in the first half. She just went in there and shot the ball. I thought Nikki played solid. We just have to keep getting better.”

On the importance of the last two shots of first half…
“ I thought it was huge. Six seconds left on the clock and (Karmen Graham) makes a great defensive play. Connie races down the floor and scores and gets fouled, and then Nicole Chiodi gets her hand in, and (Karmen) hits a shot at the buzzer. It was huge. It gave us some energy, it gave us some momentum coming back into the second half. In the second half, I think we just made things happen.”

On starting Nicole Chiodi in the second half…
“ She was making plays. I think you’ve got to go with your hot kids, and I thought she was making plays. She was making things happen, and she wasn’t hurting us. She was making good passes, she was going a good job on defense, she was getting great rebounds, and she was making plays. The thing that she does, she keeps her eye inside for Connie. She made one bad decision, but she keeps her eye inside. She knows where our bread and butter is, and she does a nice job. I’ve said all it along, I think Nicole is really going to be a nice player for us down the road, and sooner or later she is going to really start playing for us.”

On the key to the win…
“ I think playing together as a team. I think in the first half it was me more than anything. The first 10 minutes we were off to a really rough to start. I’m yelling and screaming and they are getting frustrated, and I’m thinking I need to just calm down and coach my team. We were up by two at halftime and I told the ladies that we were in a ballgame, what else is new. They are a good, solid team. We are not going to beat anyone by forty. They are a very good team, a very well-coached team, and people are going to come in and think that they can beat us. We’re going to have to come pound out every game, and I thought we did that today.”

Connie Myers

On overall performance…
“ As a team, I think this is our best performance. As an individual, statistically it was my best game.

On SIUE not double-teaming…
“ I think they are one of the first teams that hasn’t doubled down on me. I tried to go baseline more because Coach told me when I go middle, I have two people on me. But, when I go baseline, one-on-one that helps too.”

On how she tries to get into the shooting groove…
“ I didn’t get down on myself because I knew they were good shots. I just kept shooting.”

Nicole Chiodi

On getting used to the NKU system…
“ I don’t really have that much to lose when I go out there, but it is much different playing from playing high school to college. It’s a lot faster of a game.”
