NKU vs. Lewis (Dec. 9, 2004)

Head Coach Nancy Winstel

On getting the win against Lewis…
“Tonight was a big win for us. It was our first home win, and we’ve lost two at home, and to beat a team as good as Lewis in a must-win situation in the conference was good for us. The way we played in the first half was frustrating, but I thought we battled well in the second half. I think everybody contributed.”

On changes made during the comeback in the second half…
“I just went and stuck with the zone, the two-three zone. We don’t play much of the zone. They were spreading everything out and taking us off the dribble. They were killing us off the dribble. In the second half they were two of three in taking us one-on-one, and we couldn’t stop that. So, we went to the zone, and the zone got us back into the game. Even late in the game and we knew they were going to shoot the three, I asked the kids if they wanted to stay in the zone or go back to man-on-man, and they felt confident in the zone at that time. It was probably best for us to do.”

On Angela Healy’s contribution…
“Healy just keeps getting better and better, and she going to get better offensively. She has a great court presence. She doesn’t get riled; if she is you can’t tell. She tries to do what you ask her to do. She understands what’s going on. She doesn’t hurt you, she helps you.”

Karmen Graham

On the importance of the win…
“I think it was a really big win for us because we hadn’t won at home yet this year. So, to come back off the road, we just beat Saint Joe’s, so we are starting a streak.”

On good free throw shooting as a team…
“The game was (seven) points, and we shot a ton of free throws, so the game could have easily been closer if we hadn’t made those free throws. The free throws were vital.”

Nikki Perkins

On her play when not getting shots…
“I think the main thing is when you aren’t shooting good, you need to do other things well, and tonight I thought as a team we played well on defense. So, I tried to plug into defense and get open shooters open and pass the ball a little bit more. Obviously, my shot wasn’t falling, but you have to do other things when that happens.”

On handling the ball against Lewis’ press…
“Coming in to the game, we knew they were going to press us. They are a good team, they are athletic and they are quick. And I thought as a team we did a good job breaking their press, coming to the ball and helping each other out. I think we did a great job with that.”

On the effectiveness of the zone…
“We had been watching the films, and we saw that they didn’t want to shoot the ball from the outside much. And that’s one move that we made, and I thought probably won the game for us because we moved well in the zone and they didn’t get too many open looks. The only thing we didn’t rebound as well out of it as we could, but it really helped us win this game.”
