NKU vs. Kentucky Wesleyan (Feb. 5, 2005)

Head Coach Nancy Winstel

Coach Winstel on Myers...

“We rely on Connie a lot. I didn't think Connie was herself on Thursday. Southern Indiana did a pretty good job of stopping her. But tonight, Connie, like a true warrior, bounced back and played well. We need her to do that. And we're hitting key shots on the perimeter as well.”

On teams playing zone defense...

“It was a defining moment in the game when they went to the zone and we answered. We haven't always done that, but the first time they went it, we hit a three. When that happened, they had to go out and guard it. When they did that, look who's on the inside one-on-one. And one-on-one, Connie is a handful.”

What NKU did better today than at KWC...
“We're home. Losing Thursday motivated us. But I also think that [KWC] is a good young team, but they're young. And they're just going to keep getting better, but I think our experience kicked in a little bit today. But they're tough. We knew we had to get this today. And even though it wasn't pretty at times - it was a little sloppy at times and coach was a little crazy at times - but we knew we needed to get it and I think we did.”

Connie Meyers

On getting 20 rebounds...
“I felt like I was rebounding a lot, so twenty is pretty cool.”

On teams playing zone defense...

“It opens up the inside a lot for me and the rest of the post players, so it gives me the opportunity to have more one-on-one attacks.”

On what NKU did differently here than at the Sportscenter...

“It was probably just the time that we’ve had to learn each other’s styles better...to come together as a team and learn how each other plays.”

Karyn Creager

On the zone...

“We're supposed to work within our offense. Our main goal if they play the zone is just to attack the gap and to pass the ball around the perimeter until you can get a good inside shot by getting it to Connie. But the main thing is just attacking the gap and kicking it out.”

On Myers' performance...

“She's stepped up since Karmen's been gone, and Angela has stepped up too.”

Biggest difference between game here and at KWC...
“I think tonight we came out with a lot of intensity. We got after them on defense and that helped out our offense. But I think we were just well prepared.”
