NKU vs. Bellarmine (Jan. 13, 2005)

Head Coach Nancy Winstel

On beating Bellarmine…
“ It was a big, huge win. Bellarmine is such a good team and such a fine program. They are so good offensively and to hold them to a little over 50 points that’s tremendous. We didn’t shoot great. We didn’t play great, but we did what we had to do to win the ball game. We missed some shots, but they did, too. We hung in there, and it was good enough. We have some young kids playing in some key positions doing some great things for us, and they hung in there. They are only going to get better. I thought (Elizabeth Burrows’) senior presence and Connie’s senior presence was a calming factor for us. I played all eight players, and all eight players contributed. We’re only going to get better. That’s our goal, to get better.”

On the turnovers at the end of the game…
“They drive me crazy. We’re trying to do too much, and we’re trying to make plays. They turned up their pressure, and they had good quickness. It drives me crazy. We should have won the game by more than we did. It’s almost like we tried to give it away. If a team beats us, that’s one thing. But if we beat ourselves, then we need to stop beating ourselves. If we get to the point where if we don’t play great but we stop beating ourselves, we’re going to compete with some pretty good teams. We’ve been doing that all year, and we are beating ourselves less, but there are still plenty of room for improvement.”

On the importance of the win in the conference race…
“ It was huge. We were in dead last place at one point. The thing about it is that we are either in second or third place right now, but we could go back down to last real fast too. The parity in this conference is so awesome. It’s just so tough that there is no easy night. We are thrilled to win the game, but we have got to keep getting better. We have to start getting healthy, and we have to keep working hard because it just doesn’t get an easier. And, you have to win at home. We feel like we’ve lost enough at home because we’ve already lost three at home. That might be more than we’ve ever lost here. Our goal is to not lose anymore at home.”

Connie Myers

On shutting down Princess Wimsatt…
“ We practiced on it all week. We had (NKU head athletic trainer) Cris Stickley imitating her, and he did a real good job. Our guards tried to stay in front of her instead of running beside her and letting her get that extra step.”

On her performance…
“ I was happy with my game. I thought all of our post players did a pretty good job on their post players. We didn’t give them any easy shots, and the shots they got they pretty much earned them because they had to make a move.”

On the importance of the games at home…
“ It is really important. We definitely need to win these games at home, and we need to get the wins on the road too because it is a little harder to win on the road.”

Angela Healy

On protecting the ball better in the second half…
“ Basically, coach told me the other girl was playing better than me, so that kind of motivated me.”

On how the two teams’ post players stack up against each other…
“ I think our post players are better all around, but Karmen and I didn’t really hit the shots that we needed to hit in the first half. We came back in the second half when it mattered.”

Karyn Creager

On how the team defended Princess after the half…
“ Our goal was to keep on Princess. She is one of the quickest players in the conference, and her game is driving and dishing out to the three-point shooters. I was playing my hardest to keep her in front and not let her penetrate in there.”
