MIDLAND, Mich. - The quest for victory No. 500 will take at least one more day for Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball head coach Nancy Winstel.

Ferris State denied Winstel her 500th coaching win Thursday by posting a 67-54 victory over NKU in the Great Lakes Valley Conference/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Classic at the Bennett Sports Center. The Norse (4-7) committed 24 turnovers and shot just 32.7 percent from the field.

Winstel, in her 25th season as a head coach, is now 499-199. Winstel owns a 460-158 record at NKU in 22 years, and she won 39 games in three seasons as the head coach at Midway (Ky.) College.

Kristin Reinhart scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the second half Thursday to lead Ferris State, which improved to 3-7. The Bulldogs built a 41-31 lead with 14:31 remaining in the game, but NKU rallied with a 9-0 run to pull within 41-40 on a layup by Connie Myers.

Ferris State responded with an 11-3 run to extend its lead to 52-43 with 7:10 left in the game. Reinhart capped that spurt by making a basket while being fouled and converting the free throw for a 52-43 advantage.

The Bulldogs led by as many as 14 points late in the game and defeated NKU for the second straight time. In the last meeting between the two schools on Dec. 29, 2001, Ferris State held off NKU, 70-65.

Myers led NKU with 19 points and eight rebounds, but she also had eight turnovers. Elizabeth Burrows added 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Norse, who committed 13 turnovers in the first half.

Karmen Graham chipped in nine points and six rebounds for NKU, which shot just 7-for-26 (26.9 percent) from the field in the first half and trailed at the break by a 31-24 score.

Bridget Horwitz finished with 15 points and six rebounds for Ferris State, which shot 44.1 percent from the field. NKU won the rebounding battle by a 40-36 margin.

NKU will meet host Northwood (Mich.) at 3 p.m. Friday. The Norse will resume GLVC play next Thursday night with a road game at Missouri-St. Louis.
