---Jenny Hand took both her singles and doubles matches to help the Norse to a 5-4 victory over Rockhurst on Saturday.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women’s tennis team rebounded from a hard-fought loss on Friday with a narrow 5-4 victory over Rockhurst University Saturday morning at the Yeager Tennis Complex.

Still reeling from back-to-back losses on Thursday and Friday, the NKU men’s tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to Rockhurst.

In women’s action, NKU (13-5, 4-1 GLVC) went 2-for-3 in doubles play as Jenny Hand and Ivana Misic easily dispatched Mary Lanaghan and Jaycie Schmidt 8-1 in the third flight while Michelle Schirmann and Kristen Sunday narrowly edged Kandice Belanger and Leigh-Anne Fourie 8-6.

The Hand/Misic duo improved their record to 9-1 on the season while the Schirmann/Sunday tandem upped their record to 13-5.

For Rockhurst, Hannah Lazenby and Caitlin Buckley needed a tiebreak set to defeat Stephanie Isaacs and Jillian Sturgeon 9-8 (7-5) in the first doubles flight.

In women’s singles action, Rockhurst (9-8, 4-1 GLVC) took the top three flight points but it was the 42nd-ranked Norse who got the better of the Hawks by taking the bottom three flight points for the 5-4 victory.

Hand won her second match of the day by downing Mary Lanaghan (6-3, 6-1) in the fourth flight.  Sturgeon cruised by Rachel Lanaghan (6-1, 6-3) to bring her season record to 14-4 while Maggie Koetter (17-1) won her 11th-consecutive singles match by blitzing past Fourie 7-5, 6-4.

In men’s action, NKU (11-7, 3-2 GLVC) was able to get two points out of Ignacio Ortiz as he won his singles match over Victor Klintcharov by a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 count and his doubles match with Fritz Dlabik over Ben and Zach Newell 8-2.

The Norse were only able to win one other point, a 6-3, 6-0 singles decision from Tyler Fraser over Ryan Field.

Rockhurst (10-4, 4-0 GLVC) took the four other singles points and the two remaining doubles point for the team victory.

Both teams will be back in GLVC action at the Yeager Tennis Complex when they host Indianapolis on Tuesday, April 7.  First serve is scheduled to take place at 2 p.m.

The NKU women’s team can clinch a spot in the GLVC tournament should they defeat the Greyhounds.  The men’s team can clinch a berth in the tournament with two wins in their final three matches.
