HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Northern Kentucky University men’s
and women’s tennis teams broke out the broom and dustpan
as they swept their respective matches against Transylvania University
Sunday afternoon.
Both NKU teams dismantled their Pioneer counterparts by 9-0 final
scores each. The Norse combined to take 30 out of 31 sets.
In the women’s match, NKU (5-4) only allowed Transylvania
(5-5) to win a total of 13 games in the six singles and three doubles
matches.
Stephanie Isaacs and Michelle Schirmann swept their opponents by
6-0, 6-0 final each.
Kristen Sunday (6-2, 6-1), Jenny Hand (6-1, 6-1), Jillian Sturgeon
(6-1, 6-0), and Maggie Koetter (6-1, 6-0) each won singles matches
for the Norse.
The teams of Isaacs and Sturgeon (8-3), Schirmann and Sunday (8-2),
and Hand and Ivana Misic (8-1) took the doubles matches for NKU.
In the men’s action, Will Knoll dropped the only set of the
day for NKU (4-4) but rallied to win a close tiebreak set 10-8.
Jason Kramer decisively won the sixth flight 6-0, 6-0 over Clinton
Colliver.
Ignacio Ortiz (6-3, 6-3), Fritz Dlabik (6-2, 6-2), Ricardo Weaver
(6-3, 6-2), and Tyler Fraser (6-2, 6-1) rounded out the singles
wins for the Norse.
The duos of Dlabik and Ortiz (8-2), Knoll and Felipe Rossetti (8-4),
and Fraser and Lee Lonergan (8-1) took the doubles points from
their Pioneer opposition.
Transylvania (0-1) was playing in its first matches of the season.
The NKU women return to action tomorrow against Baldwin-Wallace
College of Ohio. The men take a day of rest before facing Lynchburg.
First serve in both matches will take place at noon.
