KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Northern Kentucky University men’s
soccer team was denied its fifth Great Lakes Valley Conference
championship on Sunday when the Norse fell to host Rockhurst by
a 2-0 score.
Tom Heinemann got the scoring started for the Hawks (16-1-3) in
the 42nd minute, taking advantage of a high service from Mark Anthony
Foster to snap a header from six yards out past NKU goalkeeper
Michael Lavric for his 10th goal of the season.
Midfielder Pat Kearns put the icing on the cake in the 89th minute,
getting a pass deep from Kyle Samuelson to score his first goal
of the year from four yards out to give the Hawks their second
GLVC title in four seasons.
The Rockhurst defense was typically strong, holding NKU midfielder
Steven Beattie, the GLVC’s leading scorer with 20 goals,
without a shot in the contest. Lavric made six saves in the loss.
NKU (15-2-2) now awaits selection to the NCAA Midwest Regional
Tournament, to be held next weekend at a location to be determined.
Selections will be made on Monday and announced at NCAA.com.
