SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Northern Kentucky University men’s
soccer team closed out a perfect regular season with a 2-0 victory
at Drury on Sunday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
The Norse
(18-0 overall, 13-0 GLVC) opened the scoring in the 40th minute
when Jason Larkin took Dan Impellizzeri’s pass and lobbed
a shot over the outreached arms of Panther goalkeeper Cesar Cereijo
for his fourth goal of the season.
Braden Bishop scored his 13th goal of the season and 25th of his
career on an unassisted tally in the 66th minute to put the game
away. Bishop took a wide-open breakaway and fired a shot from eight
yards out to touch the twine.
The NKU defense was stellar, giving
up just six shots to Drury and forcing goalkeeper Andy Ortman to
make only one save to pick
up the win. This marks the first time in three years - and just
the fifth time in 20 years - that a GLVC team has run the table
in conference play. Southern Illinois at Edwardsville accomplished
the feat in 2003, going 10-0 against conference opponents.
The Norse
clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament and will
face No. 8 seed Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday at the Town & Country
Sports Complex in Wilder. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. BOX SCORE
