ST. LOUIS -
Neither team scored in 110 minutes of action Friday, but one squad
had to advance since it was the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley
Conference Tournament.
And when the
penalty kicks were over, it was Wisconsin-Parkside on the winning
side of a 6-5 shootout against Northern Kentucky University. The
contest goes down as a tie for both teams, but the Rangers move
on to the championship game against top-seeded Southern Illinois
at Edwardsville.
NKU and Wisconsin-Parkside
met after the event had to be moved from Edwardsville, Ill., to
St. Louis due to heavy rains which have fallen all week. SIUE's
Korte Stadium was deemed unplayable for Friday due to the water
and the GLVC Tournament semifinals were played at St. Louis University
High School on an artificial turf field.
NKU, the No.
2 seed, is now 14-2-3 and ranked 14th nationally in the Division
II poll. Wisconsin-Parkside (13-2-4) is the No. 3 seed and ranked
18th nationally.
NKU had beaten
Wisconsin-Parkside two straight times, including a 2-1 win over
the Rangers in last season’s GLVC Tournament. Earlier this
year, NKU posted a 1-0 win at Wisconsin-Parkside.
Despite the
tie, NKU is expected to receive its first-ever berth in the NCAA
Division II Tournament when the pairings are announced Monday.
