HIGHLAND HEIGHTS,
Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team will
meet Wisconsin-Parkside at 6 p.m. (EST) Friday in the semifinals
of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at Edwardsville,
Ill.
NKU, the No.
2 seed, enters Friday with a 14-2-2 record and is ranked 14th nationally
in the Division II poll. Wisconsin-Parkside (13-2-3) is the No.
3 seed and is ranked 18th nationally.
NKU has beaten
Wisconsin-Parkside two straight times, including a 2-1 win over
the Rangers in last season’s GLVC Tournament. Earlier this
year, NKU posted a 1-0 win at Wisconsin-Parkside.
Southern Illinois
at Edwardsville (12-3-3) is the top seed and host for the GLVC Tournament.
The Cougars meet fifth-seeded Lewis in other semifinal contest Friday.
The championship
game is set for 2 p.m. Sunday. Pairings for the NCAA Division II
Tournament will be announced Sunday, and NKU is expecting to receive
its first-ever berth in that event.
NKU is seeking
its first GLVC Tournament championship since 1995. The Norse have
won a total of four GLVC titles (1987, ’92, '93 and ’95).
NKU's 14 wins
are the most since the 1996 season, when the Norse finished 14-5-1.
The most victories in NKU history is 16, set in 1995.
NKU owns the
GLVC’s stingiest defense, having allowed just nine goals in
18 games. Norse goalie Andy Ortman has posted 10 shutouts and owns
a 0.45 goals against average.
Norse freshman
Braden Bishop leads the team with nine goals. Bishop was also named
GLVC Freshman of the Year.
Chris Thompson
scored a goal and assisted two others last Sunday as NKU rolled
to a 3-0 win over Indianapolis in the first round of the GLVC Tournament
at Wilder, Ky.
