INDIANAPOLIS
- The Northern Kentucky University men's soccer team received its
first Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week recognition
Monday, as junior forward Chris Thompson earned the honor.
Thompson, a
graduate of Elder High School in Cincinnati, helped NKU capture
three GLVC wins last week, including a pair of road victories against
nationally ranked teams.
Thompson's top
effort of the week came in NKU's 2-1 overtime win at No. 15 Lewis
on Sunday. Against the Flyers, Thompson scored both of his team’s
goals. He posted the first goal of the contest at the 5:24 mark
of the first half off an assist from teammate Chad Cook.
In the 94th
minute, Thompson shocked Lewis when he netted the game's golden
goal unassisted to give the Norse a 2-1 overtime victory. The marker
was his fourth, and third game-winner of the season. This marks
the second time in Thompson's career he has earned the GLVC Player
of the Week honor.
Thompson was
relatively silent last Tuesday in a 5-1 victory over Bellarmine,
managing only a single shot attempt while five different Norse tallied
in the rout. He duplicated the feat Friday as the Norse posted a
stunning 1-0 decision over No. 24 Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha,
Wis.
NKU moved into
second place in the GLVC standings with the three wins and now sits
at 9-2-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the GLVC. The Norse have also won
five consecutive games and expect to jump into the national rankings
this week.
NKU returns
to action at 5 p.m. Friday when Rockhurst visits the Town &
Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.
