NORSE USE LATE GOALS TO DEFEAT SVSU - Sept. 3, 2005
NKU scores three goals in second half to coast past Saginaw Valley State

Kyle Roberts

WILDER, Ky. - David Lies, Dan Impellizzeri and Kyle Roberts each scored goals in the second half Saturday night as the Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team posted a 3-0 win over Saginaw Valley State at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

Lies snapped a scoreless tie at the 68:11 mark when he converted a rebound shot past goalie Eric Carnes. Roberts had sent a corner kick into the box, and Lies’ first attempt was blocked by a Saginaw Valley State defender.

Lies followed the loose ball and nudged a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced into the net for a 1-0 NKU lead.

The Norse sealed the win with less than four minutes remaining when Tony Capurro sent a cross into the box and Impellizzeri finished for a goal. Roberts added an insurance goal with two minutes left by converting a penalty kick.

Goalie Michael Braun recorded the shutout for NKU (2-1) and had four saves. NKU held an 11-8 edge in shots and a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

A year ago, NKU and Saginaw Valley State played to a 0-0 tie. The Cardinals dropped to 0-3-1 with the loss on Saturday.

NKU will begin Great Lakes Valley Conference play at 7:30 p.m. Friday when Kentucky Wesleyan visits the Town & Country Sports Complex.
