ASHLAND, Ohio - Dean
Williams snapped a 1-1 tie early in the second half with a goal
as the Ashland men’s soccer team defeated Northern Kentucky
University, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon.
Williams had earlier
assisted a first-half goal by Brandon Fuller to allow the Eagles
to tie the contest. NKU (8-4 overall) scored first when David Lies
headed in a corner kick from Kyle Roberts in the 20th minute.
It was the fourth goal
of the season for Lies, a senior defender and a graduate of Colerain
High School.
Ashland tied the game
in the 35th minute as Fuller took a cross from Williams and found
the back of the net from 10 yards.
Williams tallied the
winning goal - an unassisted score into an empty net - just four
minutes into the second half. On that play, NKU was trying to clear
the ball out of the box and made an errant kick. Williams took advantage
of the situation and scored his second goal of the season.
Ashland finished with
a 10-8 edge in shots, but NKU held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Ashland, a member of
the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, improved to
7-4-1. A year ago, NKU defeated Ashland by a 1-0 score at Wilder,
Ky.
NKU resumes Great Lakes
Valley Conference play at 8:30 p.m. Friday with a road game at Missouri-St.
Louis. The Norse conclude the trip Sunday at 3:30 p.m. with a GLVC
contest at Missouri-Rolla.
NKU is 5-2 in the GLVC
going into this weekend’s games.
