NKU PICKS UP 3-1 WIN OVER BELLARMINE - Oct. 2, 2005
Norse improve to 8-3 overall, 5-2 in the GLVC

Tony Capurro celebrates his goal Sunday

WILDER, Ky. - David Lies and Tony Capurro each scored goals in the second half Sunday as the Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team defeated Bellarmine, 3-1, at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

Jim Delaney added a first-half score for NKU, now 8-3 overall, 5-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Delaney’s goal gave the Norse a 1-0 lead at the 19:44 mark.

Bellarmine drew even at the 48:22 mark when Ryan Pomeroy drilled a shot into the back of the net. Lies, however, countered by chipping a 12-yard shot over the head of Bellarmine goalie Justin Welply into the net to give NKU a 2-1 advantage at the 50:43 mark.

Capurro sealed the Norse victory at the 82:29 mark by taking a pass from Chris Thompson and beating Welply with a one-on-one breakaway shot to give NKU a 3-1 lead.

Freshman goalie Anthony Sucietto played all 90 minutes for NKU and recorded three saves. The Norse finished with an 11-8 edge in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Norse hit the road for three straight games this week, beginning with a 4 p.m. contest at Ashland on Wednesday. NKU will visit both Missouri-St. Louis (8:30 p.m. Friday) and Missouri-Rolla (3:30 p.m. Sunday) before returning home Oct. 14 to meet Southern Illinois at Edwardsville.
