NORSE DEFEAT GANNON IN HOME FINALE - Oct. 19, 2005
NKU posts 1-0 victory over Golden Knights to improve to 10-6-1

David Lies

WILDER, Ky. - David Lies scored his fifth game-winning goal of the season Wednesday as the Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team posted a 1-0 win over Gannon (Pa.) at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

Lies, a senior defender and a graduate of Colerain High School, netted the only goal of the contest at the 33:39 mark in the first half as NKU snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 10-6-1. Lies followed a shot by Chris Thompson on the play and drilled the ball into the back of the net from directly in front of the goal.

It was the sixth goal of the season for Lies, who has netted five winning scores this fall.

NKU goalies Keith Kelly and Jeremy Curington combined for the shutout and four saves. Gannon goalie Alex Scott finished with seven saves.

NKU avenged a 2-1 loss to Gannon (8-4-3) last season at Erie, Pa. The Norse, in fifth place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings with a 6-4-1 record, will visit Saint Joseph’s (5-12 overall, 2-9 GLVC) at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

NKU will conclude the regular season Sunday with a GLVC contest at Indianapolis.

The top four teams will host first-round GLVC Tournament games on Oct. 30. Southern Illinois at Edwardsville is in first place with a 9-0-1 record, followed by Rockhurst (9-2-1), Wisconsin-Parkside (8-2-1) and Quincy (6-3-2).
