ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The
Northern Kentucky University men’s golf team placed three
individuals in the top 10 and won the NCAA Division II Great Lakes
Regional championship Wednesday with a final score of 891 (+39).
Curtis Phelps, a senior
from Owensboro, Ky., fired a 3-over-par 74 during Wednesday’s
final round at the St. Joseph Country Club to capture the medal.
Phelps had been atop the leader board at the end of play during
each of the first two rounds, and he completed the 54-hole tournament
with a score of 219 (+6).
Phelps tallied five
birdies during Wednesday’s final round. He won the medal by
two strokes over runner-up Dave Patronik (221) of Gannon.
NKU entered the final
round with an 18-stroke lead over Grand Valley State, and the Norse
took the team title by 18 shots over the second-place Lakers (909).
The Norse’s Andrew
Jewell posted a third-place finish with a three-round total of 222,
including a 75 on Wednesday. NKU sophomore David Shearer also fired
a 75 during the final round and tied for fifth place with a total
of 224.
Mark Krahe finished
in 11th place with a score of 226 for NKU, which won the Great Lakes
Region title for the second straight season. The Norse also earned
a trip to the national finals, which will be held May 17-20 at Savannah,
Ga.
A year ago, NKU posted
a 17th-place finish at the nationals in Deland, Fla.
