Ill. - DeAaron Williams and Leslie Malone combined for 36 points
as Northern Kentucky University rallied for a 62-60 win at Lewis
on Thursday night in the Neil Carey Arena.
Williams finished
with 19 points and seven rebounds for NKU, which won its sixth consecutive
game and improved to 15-4 overall. Malone added 17 points and nine
rebounds for the Norse, who are ranked 11th nationally in the NCAA
Division II poll.
Malone made
two free throws with 15.4 seconds remaining to give NKU a 61-58
advantage. Lewis’ Jason Genova then missed a 3-pointer, but
Marty Strus grabbed the offensive rebound with 2.1 seconds left
and scored to make it 61-60.
Williams was
fouled with less than a second left on the clock, and he made the
first free throw to extend NKU’s lead to 62-60. He missed
the second free throw intentionally and time expired. Lewis, which
led by five points (28-23) at halftime, dropped to 11-8 overall.
Dustin Maguire
added 11 points for the Norse, who upped their Great Lakes Valley
Conference record to 8-2 and took over sole possession of first
place in the GLVC East Division standings. Bellarmine, which entered
Thursday night tied with NKU atop the GLVC East Division, was unable
to travel to Quincy due to the winter storm and the game was postponed.
The Knights will make up that game Monday at Quincy.
NKU will meet
Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday afternoon in Somers, Wis.
