HIGHLAND HEIGHTS,
Ky. - Northern Kentucky University men’s basketball head coach
Dave Bezold has added Saint Louis University transfer Dustin Maguire
to the roster for the 2008-09 season.
Maguire, a 6-foot-5,
205-pound guard/forward, scored 2,080 career points in high school.
After graduating from Edwardsville (Ill.) High School in 2006, he
attended Saint Louis and saw action in nine games during the 2006-07
season.
Maguire sat
out as a redshirt last year and will have three seasons of eligibility
remaining at NKU.
“Dustin
is an outstanding shooter, and he brings two years of Division I
college experience to our program after playing one season and then
sitting out last year as a redshirt,” said Bezold, who has
guided NKU to two straight appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
“He can step in and help us right away with his ability to
shoot the ball. We lost five really good seniors from this past
season, and we’re excited that Dustin is joining us to help
replace those guys.”
Maguire began
his prep career at Bethalto (Ill.) High School and started all three
years before transferring to Edwardsville High School as a senior.
He led Edwardsville to a 30-1 record as a senior and averaged 16.4
points per game. Maguire also shot 60.6 percent from the field and
knocked down 50.4 percent (54-for-107) of his attempts from 3-point
range.
He was named
the 2006 Illinois Class 2A Player of the Year and earned first team
St. Louis Post-Dispatch All-Metro accolades as well. He was also
a 2006 McDonald’s All-America game nominee.
Maguire joins
an NKU team that posted a 21-8 record last season. The Norse won
the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division title with a 14-5
record and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Great
Lakes Regional.
NKU must replace
three starters, including leading scorer Harrison Morton (14.1 ppg),
from that team. The Norse also have Holy Cross High School standout
Corey Sorrell, who signed with NKU last fall, joining the team next
season.
Sorrell averaged
27 points and 12 rebounds per game while shooting 43 percent from
3-point range as a senior. He was also named the Ninth Region Player
of the Year by the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches and
has been selected to play in the upcoming Kentucky-Indiana series.
