NKU vs. Southern Indiana (Feb. 3, 2005)

Head Coach Dave Bezold

On the outcome of the game…
“Southern is a very talented team, and we fouled too much. We sent them to the line too many times. The only one that had a consistent game tonight offensively for us was Mike Kelsey, and we really didn’t get any more offense from anybody except maybe Courtney Fergerson.”

On Kelsey’s 28 points…
“He’s just been fantastic the last month and a half. He’s been an All-American. If the rest of our club would step up their game like he has over the last month and a half, we wouldn’t have a problem winning basketball games. And, that’s our challenge. We have to have other people step up and perform.”

On changes before Saturday’s game against Kentucky Wesleyan…
“We are going to try and make shots and not foul as much. That’s the bottom line. We have to have other people make plays. We probably missed four or five layups in the first half. We were unable to get shots and make shots in the second half. That’s the difference. We are going not going to be able to foul.”

On changes Southern Indiana made since first meeting of the season…
“I couldn’t really tell a difference at all. I didn’t look at the score one time the whole game until I came out the final time. So, I really don’t know what the difference between was between there and here. I know (Kelsey) had a good game, and usually when (Kelsey) has a big game we’re in the game the whole time. They had five guys in double figures. They just had balanced scoring all the way down, and that hurt us.”

On changes Southern Indiana made defensively on Kelsey at the half…
“They were just jumping him. They were throwing two guys at him the whole time, then a couple times we just couldn’t find the open guy. I know they found me one time as the open guy, and I missed the shot. It’s just a matter of getting open and knocking down shots, and I guess we didn’t do that. We put up 67 points, but we need to score more than that and hold them to under 80. We just need to do a better job overall next time out.”

On holding Randy Holbrook to nine points…
“I had to guard him most of the time. I’m not happy I gave up nine points. I’d rather just give up zero points. He’s a good player, but it does help them out when they have such balanced scoring.”

On outrebounding Southern Indiana…
“With the lineup we started with with all seniors, we play hard all the time. We usually will box out all the time and get the rebounds, so we weren’t surprised by that.”

On the adjustments Southern Indiana made defensively on Kelsey…
“I think he still got some looks, but I just think some of his looks didn’t go down. He’s a great shooter, and he’s a guy we rely on. He carries us a lot through the games. He’s our best player, and he does a great job for us. A couple of his shots didn’t fall in the second half, but they did a better job of guarding him in the second half. He still got some shots, and if they would’ve gone down it would have been a different ballgame.”

On difference between the two meetings…
“I think offensively some shots didn’t fall in the first half. They made a little run there towards the end of the half, but it was a close game towards the end of the half. Going into the second half it was still a close game. They just did a better job offensively than we did, and they were able to walk away happy.”

On things to work on going into Saturday’s game…
“We’ll go over all that stuff tomorrow, I’m sure. We’re going to come out and keep fighting for a win. We’ve still got a chance in this thing, and we’re on a little bit of a slide now, but we are trying to rebound. And, this team does a great job of bouncing back. We get mad when we lose, but we don’t let it sting us for very long. We get back and do some great things, so hopefully that will happen and we’ll get back on a roll.”
