NKU vs. SIUE (Dec. 11, 2004)

Head Coach Dave Bezold

On the team’s effort…
“I was much happier with the way our team competed. We competed really hard. We found the group that was going to compete. We stayed with the five, six man rotation. So, that’s what we are going to have to do. We are going to have to find the five, six, seven guys who are going to do and play exactly how we ask them to. Then we will be in ballgames, and we are going to start winning those ballgames.”

On how the close games early in the season will help the team at the end…
“The close games are going to help us if we learn how to win them. That’s the most important thing. We’ve been talking about playing winning basketball, and we did that for the first four games of the season, and it has been sporadic and inconsistent since then. We are going to have to do everything to evaluate why that is and work to correct it.”

On the effect of the break for exams…
“We are going to practice tomorrow and start working on things I think are problems. Then, we will just go from there. Teams get better or worse after exams, and this team is not going to get worse I promise that.”

Travis Rasso

On learning the NKU system…
“There is a big difference between high school and college. It is a lot faster, so you have to get used to the speed of the game. Once you get that down, it’s a little easier.”

On areas of improvement…
“We need to work on getting over screens, because their cross-screens killed us with the big man. On the offensive end, we just need to be consistent. In the second half, we weren’t as consistent on the offensive as we were the first.”

On guarding Dan Heimos…
“It’s a little different. Every now and then in high school I would have to guard a guy bigger than me, but it was very rare. So, it was a little different to see someone bigger than me.”

Mike Kelsey

On getting more open looks…
“It just came in the flow of the game. It took a while, but I started getting some open looks. On offense, we can’t get a flow, and we are just struggling right now.”

On having many more shots than assists as a team…
“At times we see that there are mismatches out there, but we have guys who are bigger. We have guys like Kevin Reinhardt, Harrison and even Derek. They are bigger guys, and they can get mismatches with bigger guys on them, and they are quick for how big they are. So, we see those mismatches, and we try to utilize them. That could be one reason, but we just try to find mismatches and go with it.”
