NKU vs. Indianapolis (Feb. 12, 2005)

Head Coach Dave Bezold

On the loss to Indianapolis…

“The disappointing part was the turnovers and free throws. If we don’t turn it over 19 times and make some free throws, there’s probably a 90 percent chance that we win this ballgame.”

On David Logan’s performance…
“He may be the best guard I’ve ever seen in this league. He can create any shot for himself at any time. He can also create any shot for other people. We defended him in such a way that we didn’t want him to drive and kick it to other guys with wide open looks. So, he did what he is. He’s a great player, and he made the plays.”

On Indianapolis holding Mike Kelsey to 11 points…
“They just have great perimeter defense. When you don’t have a speed advantage or a quickness advantage or an athletic advantage, they were capable of doing it. They did a great job off the screens and switching up on him and not letting him get good looks.”

On winning the rebounding battle…
“That is sometimes misleading. I was really happy with our inside guys in Rasso, Cary and Smith. They played great. They gave us probably the best inside performance of the year, and we just have to figure out a way to get more perimeter shooting from people other than Kelsey.”

Sean Rowland

On David Logan…
“It takes a team effort to stop him, and obviously we didn’t do it. You need one guy guarding him and then everyone else helping him. Sometimes players get on a roll, and no matter what you do you can’t stop them. It was one of those nights for him, and he hit some tough shots. Then other times we fell asleep.”

On the team’s defensive effort…
“We competed. We boxed out, and it was one of those games where he hit some shots and we had to do something. We had to box out when he missed shots and get rebounds. We cut it to nine or ten with five minutes to go and had a chance, but it just didn’t happen.”

On improvements before the next game…
“I think overall we just need a more concentrated effort as far as playing hard the entire game and playing together the entire game.”

Derek Smith

On his double-double…
“I wish we would have won. I’m not necessarily happy about it because we walked off the court on the losing end. So, I wish we could have won the game.”

On how to stop David Logan…
“I don’t think anybody in the conference knows the answer to that question. He’s a good ballplayer, and he seems to hit the shots when they need them the most. He really hurt us tonight. He hurt us big time.”

On the difference between the first and second halves…
“I think they hit a couple shots there at the beginning of the second half, and they got a little lead on us. We weren’t able to counter at all. Finally, some shots started happening late in the game, but it just got to be too late. We just have to do a much better job defensively.”
