EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team saw its struggles continue on Wednesday when the Norse dropped both ends of a doubleheader to No. 29 ranked Southern Indiana in non-conference play.
Alex Theiroff’s RBI-groundout and a successful double-steal by Chad Bruce and Caleb Ehmke in the bottom of the first inning gave the Eagles (22-8) all the offense they would need in a 2-0 victory in Game 1.
USI hurler Trevor Leach (5-0) was nearly untouchable, surrendering just one hit while striking out five Norse batters. NKU’s Kevin Jordan (3-1) went the distance, giving up two runs on three hits, striking out six and dotting three batters.
NKU’s offense picked up slightly in Game 2, but it wasn’t enough to stave off a 5-3 victory for USI.
The Eagles got started in the first inning once again, picking up runs on an RBI-double from Theiroff followed by an RBI-single by Chad Werry. The Norse (17-14) responded in the top of the third inning as the bottom-third of the lineup manufactured NKU’s first run of the day, culminating in a Jake Morris RBI-groundout. Evan McDole would put the Norse ahead with a two-run double later in the inning.
Another RBI-single by Werry and a sacrifice fly by Chad Bruce in the bottom of the third gave Southern Indiana the lead back, this time for good. The Eagles got an insurance run in the fifth inning on an RBI-double by Bruce.
The Norse managed just four hits in the contest as USI’s Michael Dewig (1-1) picked up his first win of the season in four innings of work. Shaun Larsen entered in the sixth inning and closed things out for the six-out save, his 10th of the season.
NKU used seven pitchers in Game 2 as Brandon Slusher (1-2) took the loss.
The Norse return home this weekend to host Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Bellarmine for a four-game series. First pitch on Saturday and Sunday is scheduled for noon. |
