SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team fell short in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener on Friday, falling to Drury by a 4-2 score.

The Panthers (9-8, 1-0 GLVC) got the scoring started in the bottom of the second when Dane Hughes laced an RBI-single to plate Jason Hall. The Norse responded in the top of the third when Jeff Bohlen scored on a balk by Drury’s Blake Wixson before Brian Erie crossed home when Brett Hofmann’s fly-ball to center was misplayed.

Drury responded with three unanswered runs, starting in the bottom of the third as R.J. Knese hit a leadoff triple to get things started before coming in on a single by Hall, who was 3-for-4 on the day. Knese would score again in the fifth on a wild pitch by NKU starter Sean Munningoff (1-2), who fanned five batters in six innings of work.

Joel Potts put the nail in the coffin for Drury in the eighth, sending a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Alex Nixon for the 4-2 final.

Wixson (2-1) pitched 7 2/3 innings, scattering six hits while striking out five. Zane Montgomery recorded the final four outs to take his second save of the season.

The loss dropped NKU to 10-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
