FLORENCE,
Ky. --- Northern Kentucky University ran its winning streak to
four games with a 3-2 win over Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday before
dropping a 4-3 decision in the second game for a doubleheader
split.
The Norse won
three of the four games against Parkside over the weekend.
The
win was Parkside’s first in the Great Lakes Valley
Conference as they improved to 4-34 overall and 1-26 in the
GLVC. NKU is now 28-20, 18-9.
Todd Lorenz
went the distance for Parkside in Game 2, scattering
eight hits and allowing three runs in nine innings. Cameron
Betourne allowed four second-inning
runs and lasted only an inning and a third as he fell to 0-3.
Andy Heston,
Kevin Jordan, and Matt Winterhalter combined to shut out the
Rangers the rest of the way, but NKU could only plate two in
the fourth
and one in
the fifth to fall short of the comeback. Kevin Dusold doubled in a run
and Larry
Pempek had an RBI-single in the fourth and Jeff Bohlen had a run-scoring
single in the fifth to account for the Norse’s runs.
Eric Braekel
threw six strong innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on eight hits
to improve to 3-4 in Game 1. Winterhalter pitched a scoreless
seventh
for his first save of the season.
Dusold had
a run-scoring single in the first to plate NKU’s first
run. In the fourth, the Norse broke a 1-1 tie when Brad Johnson
scored on
a wild pitch and Bohlen stole home during a failed pickoff-attempt
at first base.
The Norse,
entrenched in third place in the GLVC East Division, will host
West Division-leading Southern Indiana
for a twin-bill Wednesday
at 2 p.m. at
Champion Window Field
before finishing the season on the road with a pair of weekend
doubleheaders against East-leading Saint Joseph’s in Rensselaer,
Ind.
