HIGHLAND HEIGHTS,
Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University baseball team got back
on the winning track with a 13-1 trouncing of Shawnee State on
Wednesday.
The Norse got
on the board in the bottom of the first on Jeff Bohlen's RBI
single followed immediately by Jon Back's fourth home run of
the season to plate two more. Brett Hofmann added another in
the fourth with an RBI double, scoring Larry Pempek.
The Norse
broke the game open in the seventh inning, using a bases-loaded
situation to plate four runs on an RBI single from Kevin Dusold
and a sacrifice fly from Jake Shaffer. Five more runs came in
the eighth inning, with Pempek and Aaron Mentz each slapping
two-run base hits in the frame.
Eight of the
nine NKU starters ended the game with at least one base hit,
with Bohlen going 3-for-4 on the contest. Back and Mentz each
went 3-for-5, while Pempek was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Hofmann
was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles.
Ryan Schmidt
(3-0) started the pitcher-by-committee effort and wound up the
pitcher of record, as the NKU pitching staff combined to scatter
five hits and strike out eight.
Northern Kentucky
(9-12) returns to Great Lakes Valley
Conference action on Saturday as the Norse host Kentucky
Wesleyan for a four-game weekend series at Champion Window Field
in Florence. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
