QUINCY, Ill. – The
Northern Kentucky University baseball team snapped a season-opening
six-game losing streak today as they split a doubleheader against
Quincy, losing 3-2 in Game 1 before taking Game 2, 3-1.
Though
both teams are members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference,
the games were not counted as conference contests.
It took
an extra inning before either team could put a run on the board
as the Norse scored twice in the top of the eighth
as Jason
Cisper and Evan McDole each belted RBI singles. In the bottom
half, however, the Hawks answered back with three runs after
two NKU
errors.
Dave Middendorf
(0-1) took the loss in Game 1, pitching 2/3 inning of relief.
Ryan Schmidt pitched seven scoreless innings,
but
did not factor into the decision.
In the nightcap,
NKU got runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, including
Aaron
Mentz’s first home run of the season, to
take a 3-1 victory. Jake Shaffer and Brian DeCarlo accounted
for the other RBI in the contest as the Norse got their first
victory
of the season.
Sean Munninghoff
(1-1) got the win, pitching 5 2/3 innings while scattering just
four hits and striking
out four.
Eric Braeckel
pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up his first save
of the season.
The Norse (1-6)
and Hawks (1-5) will face off again Monday for another non-conference
doubleheader. First pitch
is scheduled for noon.
