FLORENCE, Ky.
- Northern Kentucky University again received superlative starting
pitching Saturday afternoon, but the Norse were able to manage just
a split against Missouri-Rolla in a doubleheader.
NKU salvaged
the split with a 4-0 win in the second game at Champion Window Field.
NKU pitcher Josh Bruns allowed just two hits in the nightcap as
the Norse improved to 27-23, 22-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Kenny Wilson
and Jon Back led the NKU offense with two hits apiece in the second
game. The Norse scored single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and
sixth innings. Bruns, meanwhile, stymied Missouri-Rolla the entire
game and finished with six strikeouts.
The Norse bounced
back after suffering a 1-0 loss in eight innings to the Miners in
the opener. Missouri-Rolla plated a run in the top of the eighth
inning to snap the scoreless deadlock and prevail in the pitchers’
duel.
NKU starter
Matt Marksbury surrendered just six hits in the first game and went
the distance, but the senior right-hander lost for the first time
this season in eight decisions. Missouri-Rolla starter Tavish Hill
shut down the Norse offense on four hits and picked up the complete-game
victory.
Missouri-Rolla
catcher Yaimel Javier-Cury gunned down three NKU runners attempting
to steal in the opener, contributing to the Miner victory.
NKU will conclude
its home season at noon Sunday with a single game against Missouri-Rolla.
NKU will recognize its 12 seniors in festivities prior to the game
Sunday.
NKU is in fourth
place in the GLVC standings, and the Norse can clinch a berth in
