---Matt Marksbury earned GLVC Pitcher of the Year honors from league coaches.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University’s Matt Marksbury has been selected as the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year by league coaches.

Marksbury, a senior right-hander and a graduate of Norwood High School, finished the season 7-1 with a 2.15 earned run average. The 6-foot-2 Marksbury made 12 starts this season and struck out 50 batters in 75 1/3 innings on the mound.

He also tossed three shutouts and five complete games while allowing just 18 earned runs. In GLVC play, Marksbury lowered his ERA to 1.88 and finished with a 6-1 record.

Marksbury joins Lenny Bays (2002) and Derrik Moeves (2004) as NKU mound standouts to earn GLVC Pitcher of the Year accolades.

Joining Marksbury on the All-GLVC first team is teammate Kevin Dusold, who batted .2745 with four home runs and a team-leading 34 runs batted in this season. Dusold, a sophomore from Oak Hills High School in his first year with the Norse, also scored 24 runs and collected six doubles.

NKU catcher Larry Pempek and Norse outfielder Jake Shaffer each were selected to the All-GLVC second team. Pempek, a sophomore from Cedar Lake, Ind., batted .264 and provided excellent defense behind the plate for NKU. Shaffer, a sophomore from Athol, Mass., hit a team-leading .347 with 12 doubles this season. Shaffer also scored a team-best 30 runs and stole 19 bases.

Three more NKU players - senior pitcher Josh Bruns, senior shortstop Kory Lonergan and senior third baseman Matt Wagers - were named honorable mention All-GLVC. Bruns, a senior pitcher from Versailles, Ohio, finished 5-4 with a 3.50 ERA. The left-hander also struck out 62 batters in 69 1 /3 innings on the mound.

Lonergan, a graduate of Dixie Heights High School, batted .331 with 19 stolen bases. He also scored 27 runs and hit nine doubles.

Wagers, a graduate of Hamilton (Ohio) High School, hit .296 with four home runs and 18 RBI. He also scored 24 runs and collected eight doubles. Wagers also finished his career as NKU’s all-time career leader in games played with 226.
