EDWARDSVILLE,
Ill. - On Saturday, it was the pitching of Matt Marksbury and Josh
Bruns that lifted Northern Kentucky University to a sweep over Southern
Illinois at Edwardsville, 7-0, and 2-1.
On Sunday, the
SIUE bats awakened and returned the favor to the Norse by scores
of 4-3 and 8-3 to salvage a split of the four-game weekend series.
In the opener
of the series Saturday afternoon, Marksbury tossed a two-hit shutout
for NKU. The senior right-hander struck out five batters and walked
just one en route to the complete-game victory.
In his last
three starts, Marksbury has hurled 23 innings of scoreless baseball.
During his last 30 innings on the mound, the Norwood, Ohio, native
has allowed just two runs.
Kevin Dusold
drove in two runs to pace NKU in the opener. In the nightcap Saturday,
NKU pushed across a run in the eighth inning to defeat SIUE, 2-1.
Bruns scattered three hits in seven innings for the win, while Nathan
Jones went two scoreless innings to notch the save.
In the opener
Sunday, James Kulovitz hit a solo home run in the bottom of the
eighth to snap a 3-3 tie and key SIUE’s 4-3 win. The Cougars
completed the sweep in the second game by plating six runs in the
sixth inning en route to an 8-3 victory.
Dusold hit a
two-run homer to lead NKU, which is 8-15 overall, 7-5 in the Great
Lakes Valley Conference. The nightcap Sunday was a non-GLVC game.
SIUE is 11-7
overall, 7-5 in the GLVC.
