Matt Marksbury

ST. LOUIS -
Matt Marksbury hurled a five-hit shutout in the opener Sunday as
Northern Kentucky University defeated Missouri-St. Louis, 1-0.
Marksbury,
a junior right-hander and a graduate of Norwood High School, recorded
11 strikeouts and walked just one batter. Kenny Wilson drove in
the game’s only run in the second inning with a single that
plated Matt Jones.
Marksbury upped
his record this season to 2-1, and he lowered his earned run average
to 2.51. He also has 28 strikeouts this spring and allowed just
nine walks.
NKU completed
the sweep with a 12-4 win in the second game. Matt Wagers and Conor
McGeehan each collected four RBI for the Norse, who rallied from
a 2-0 deficit by scoring four times in the third inning.
NKU added another
four runs in the fourth and sealed the win by scoring three times
in the seventh.
Kory Lonergan
and Jim Volpe each added two hits and scored three runs apiece.
Jon Back scored twice for the Norse, who defeated the Rivermen for
the third time in four games this weekend.
Nathan Jones
went five innings and picked up the win for NKU, which improved
to 16-9-1 overall. The Norse are 14-5-1 in the Great Lakes Valley
Conference.
Missouri-St.
Louis dropped to 4-10 overall, 3-8 in the GLVC.
NKU will play
a doubleheader at Southern Indiana on Tuesday in Evansville, Ind.
