LOUISVILLE,
Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University baseball team extended its
winning streak to eight by sweeping a doubleheader at Bellarmine
on Wednesday.
NKU won the
opener by a 5-1 score, and the Norse wrapped up the sweep with a
4-1 decision in the nightcap. NKU improved to 13-8-1 overall, 11-4-1
in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The Norse have
won eight consecutive games and surrendered just eight total runs
in those victories.
Matt Wagers scored three times and drove in three runs during the
two games. He scored twice and had two hits in the opener as NKU
coasted to a 5-1 win. Junior left-hander Josh Bruns went six innings
and had six strikeouts for the Norse in the first game.
Wagers knocked in two runs as the Norse took the second game, 4-1.
Four NKU pitchers - Matt Marksbury, Brian Beltz, Greg Moss and Steve
Thomas - combined for a three-hitter in that victory.
Moss picked up the win in relief, while Thomas notched his fourth
save of the season. Kory Lonergan went 2-for-3 and scored twice,
while Drew Rushing knocked in a pair of runs for NKU.
The Norse posted a 4-0 record against Bellarmine this spring and
have defeated the Knights seven times in the past nine meetings.
A year ago, NKU was 3-2 against Bellarmine.
NKU will visit
Missouri-St. Louis for a four-game series this weekend, starting
