FLORENCE, Ky.
- Kory Lonergan’s run-scoring double in the fifth inning snapped
a 2-2 tie and keyed Northern Kentucky University’s 4-2 win
over Lewis in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Matt Marksbury
picked up the complete-game victory for NKU and struck out five
batters. Marksbury scattered six hits in seven innings to even his
record at 1-1.
NKU took a
2-0 lead into the top of the fifth inning, but Lewis struck for
a pair of runs to tie the score. Kenny Wilson collected a one-out
single in the bottom of the inning, and he stole second.
Lonergan then
drove Wilson home with an RBI double to give the Norse a 3-2 advantage.
Jon Back’s RBI single in the sixth extended NKU’s lead
to 4-2, and Marksbury made the two-run cushion hold up by getting
the final three outs in the seventh.
NKU completed
the sweep in the nightcap with a 14-0 victory. The Norse used a
five-run fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead, and they sealed the win
by scoring six times in the eighth for a 14-0 advantage.
Lonergan went
2-for-5 and scored two runs for NKU, which is 9-8-1 overall, 7-4-1
in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Brad Meyer, Drew Rushing and
Matt Jones all had two RBI for the Norse, who took advantage of
four errors to coast past Lewis (1-13, 0-6 GLVC).
Brian Beltz
went seven innings and allowed just one hit to pick up the victory.
He also recorded six strikeouts and walked just one batter.
The teams
will conclude the weekend series with another doubleheader at noon
