HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky.
- Northern Kentucky University senior pitcher Paul David Patterson
was selected by the New York Yankees in the 16th round of the Major
League Baseball amateur draft on Tuesday.
Patterson, a 6-foot-8
right-hander, posted a 5-4 record this season for NKU. He finished
with a 1.92 earned run average and allowed just 54 hits in 79 2/3
innings pitched.
A native of Nicholasville,
Ky., Patterson held opposing hitters to a .196 batting average in
2006. A year ago, Patterson was drafted as a junior in the 44th
round by the Seattle Mariners.
Patterson was part of
a Norse pitching staff that combined for a 2.84 ERA this spring.
His best outing was a one-hit shutout against defending Great Lakes
Valley Conference champion Wisconsin-Parkside on April 29.
NKU won the GLVC Tournament
championship for the third time in the past five years and advanced
to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Norse posted a 42-20-1 overall
record.
