NKU’S PATTERSON DRAFTED BY YANKEES - June 7, 2006
Norse right-hander taken in 16th round of MLB draft

NKU’s Paul David Patterson

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University senior pitcher Paul David Patterson was selected by the New York Yankees in the 16th round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft on Tuesday.

Patterson, a 6-foot-8 right-hander, posted a 5-4 record this season for NKU. He finished with a 1.92 earned run average and allowed just 54 hits in 79 2/3 innings pitched.

A native of Nicholasville, Ky., Patterson held opposing hitters to a .196 batting average in 2006. A year ago, Patterson was drafted as a junior in the 44th round by the Seattle Mariners.

Patterson was part of a Norse pitching staff that combined for a 2.84 ERA this spring. His best outing was a one-hit shutout against defending Great Lakes Valley Conference champion Wisconsin-Parkside on April 29.

NKU won the GLVC Tournament championship for the third time in the past five years and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Norse posted a 42-20-1 overall record.
