SOMERS, Wis.
- Senior pitcher Paul David Patterson tossed a one-hitter Saturday
as Northern Kentucky University defeated Wisconsin-Parkside, 3-0,
in the second game of a doubleheader.
Patterson,
a 6-foot-8 right-hander, struck out 10 batters and walked just one
en route to the complete-game victory. The only hit Patterson (5-3)
allowed was a single by Andy Heller to start the fifth inning.
Patterson lowered
his earned run average to 2.07, and it was his third complete game
of the season.
Kenny Wilson
and Matt Jones each collected run-scoring singles in the fifth inning
for NKU. Jones later capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly in
the seventh that plated Brian DeCarlo.
The victory
allowed NKU to earn a split of the weekend four-game series. Earlier
in the day, Wisconsin-Parkside took advantage of three NKU errors
to score four times in the third inning and held on for a 4-2 win.
Todd Lorenz
scattered five hits and recorded the win for Wisconsin-Parkside.
Josh Moulton had a two-run single in the fourth inning to account
for NKU’s scoring in the opener.
Brian Beltz
took the loss even though he did not allow an earned run in five
innings. Beltz also finished with seven strikeouts and walked two
batters.
NKU is 34-17-1
overall, 32-11-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse
are ranked 16th nationally in the Division II poll and No. 2 in
the NCAA Division II North Central Region ratings.
Wisconsin-Parkside
is 22-27 overall, 19-22 in the GLVC.
NKU will close
out the regular season next weekend with a four-game series at Missouri-Rolla.
