Wagers goes 4-for-5 with four RBI in nightcap as Norse post 9-3 win

OWENSBORO, Ky. - Matt Wagers went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs as Northern Kentucky University completed a doubleheader sweep Wednesday with a 9-3 win over Kentucky Wesleyan.

Wagers, a junior right fielder, had two doubles and a pair of singles as NKU improved to 29-14-1, 27-8-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Conor McGeehan and Chris Nann each added two hits for the Norse offensive attack.

Matt Winterhalter went six innings to pick up the victory in the first game. Winterhalter (4-2) struck out six batters and allowed just two hits.

In the opener, Matt Marksbury limited Kentucky Wesleyan to one run in five innings as NKU posted a 5-2 win. Wagers added two hits for the Norse, and Jim Volpe had a two-run triple.

Marksbury, a junior right-hander, is now 4-2 on the mound this season. Steve Thomas notched his seventh save of the season by pitching the final two innings.

Thomas’ school-record streak of consecutive scoreless innings pitched ended at 28 when Kentucky Wesleyan pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh. The senior from Elder High School had not allowed a run this season until Wednesday.

NKU, in sole possession of first place in the GLVC, will play host to Indianapolis in a four-game series at Florence on Saturday and Sunday. Prior to Sunday’s opener, NKU will recognize its six seniors - McGeehan, Steve Thomas, Paul David Patterson, Joe Kendall, Matt Jones and Chris Wilson - during Senior Day festivities.
