FLORENCE, Ky.
- Chris Nann’s two-out double to right-center field in the
bottom of the ninth inning drove in Conor McGeehan with the winning
run Tuesday as Northern Kentucky University defeated Kentucky Wesleyan,
5-4, to earn a split of a doubleheader.
NKU (27-12-1
overall, 25-8-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference) rallied from
an early 4-2 deficit with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings
to tie the score at 4-all. Nann, who collected three walks in the
game, launched his team-leading 11th double of the season to plate
McGeehan with the winning run.
McGeehan went
2-for-5 for NKU, while teammate Matt Wagers was 3-for-4 with a home
run.
Steve Thomas
came out of the bullpen to pitch two innings of scoreless relief
to notch the victory.
In the opener,
Kentucky Wesleyan snapped a 4-4 tie with a run in the top of the
seventh and held on for a 5-4 win. The Panthers jumped out to a
4-0 lead, but NKU used three consecutive home runs off the bats
of McGeehan, Nann and Wagers in the sixth inning to tie the game
at 4-all.
NKU will travel
to Allendale, Mich., on Saturday to meet Grand Valley State in a
key regional doubleheader. The Norse split a doubleheader against
the Lakers earlier this season at Highland Heights, Ky.
