O’FALLON, Mo.
- Jake Smith’s run-scoring single with two out in the bottom
of the eighth inning lifted Southern Illinois at Edwardsville
to a 1-0 win over Northern Kentucky University on Saturday
in the first game of a doubleheader.
Smith’s walk-off
hit plated Jeremy Bond with the game’s only run and gave
SIUE starter Kyle Jones the victory. Jones allowed just
three hits and struck out seven.
NKU All-American
Derrik Moeves (2-1) struck out five and scattered seven
hits,
but the junior right-hander gave up three singles in the
eighth
inning. One of those hits was a bunt single by Bond, who
eventually scored the winning run.
Joe Wargo started
the eighth-inning rally with a single, and Wargo’s bunt
hit put runners on first and second with no outs. Moeves
retired the next two batters, but Smith’s single through
the left side of the infield brought Bond in from third
base with the winning run. In the nightcap,
Bond and Smith each drove in two runs as the Cougars recorded
the sweep with a 4-0 win. Smith hit a two-run home run
in the third inning to spark the Cougars.
SIUE starter
Cameron Cheek tossed a three-hit shutout and finished
with
six
strikeouts. NKU starter Paul
David Patterson gave up three runs and six hits in four
innings on the mound. SIUE improved
to 7-6 overall, 2-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
NKU dropped to 5-7 overall, 0-2 in the GLVC.
The two teams
will wrap up the four-game series at noon Sunday with a
doubleheader.
