EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Derrik Moeves tossed a five-hit shutout Saturday as the Northern Kentucky University baseball team defeated Southern Indiana, 5-0, in the first game of a doubleheader.

Moeves, a junior right-hander, finished with five strikeouts en route to the complete-game victory. Kory Lonergan went 3-for-3 and scored a run for NKU, while Alex Frank was 1-for-3 with two runs batted in.

The Norse scored three runs in the second inning and coasted behind the pitching of Moeves, who improved to 6-5 this spring. It was also his second shutout of the season and sixth complete game.

Moeves also became NKU’s all-time career leader in strikeouts with 251.

In the nightcap, Southern Indiana gained a split by scoring a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to take a 3-2 decision. Noah Wetzel scored the winning run on a squeeze play by Corey Goers with one out in the 10th inning.

Josh Moulton and Jon Back each collected two hits for NKU, which is 29-23 overall, 21-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Moulton and Back had RBI singles in the fifth inning as NKU rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game.

The Norse will close out the four-game series Sunday with a doubleheader against Southern Indiana. NKU needs one win on Sunday to wrap up the No. 3 seed in next week’s GLVC Tournament at O’Fallon, Mo.

NKU, currently in third place in the league standings, is the defending GLVC Tournament champion. The Norse are just one victory shy of reaching the 30-win mark for the fourth time in the past five years.
