O’FALLON, Mo.
- Matt Wagers snapped a 1-1 tie with a home run in the sixth inning
Thursday as the Northern Kentucky University baseball team defeated
Quincy, 2-1, in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference
Tournament.
Wagers sent an 0-1 pitch
from Quincy starter Brad Stone over the fence in left field to give
NKU a 2-1 lead, and that was all Norse starter Derrik Moeves needed.
Moeves scattered six hits in nine innings, and he added eight strikeouts
en route to the complete-game victory.
Moeves improved to 7-5
this spring, and he now has a school-record 259 strikeouts. He also
needs just four strikeouts to break his own single-season record
of 102.
Wagers went 2-for-4
and scored both NKU runs, while teammate Kory Lonergan also collected
two hits. The home run was the fifth of the season for Wagers, a
sophomore first baseman.
Matt Jones had an RBI
single in the second inning for NKU, which improved to 31-24 overall.
Third-seeded NKU will
meet second-seeded Wisconsin-Parkside in the second round at 7 p.m.
Friday.
NKU is the defending
GLVC Tournament champion. The Norse are currently ranked No. 5 in
the NCAA Division II North Central Region poll, and the top four
teams will advance to the NCAA Tournament.
