Derrik Moeves tossed a three-hit shutout

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Derrik Moeves hurled a three-hit shutout and struck out nine batters as Northern Kentucky University posted a 2-0 win over Lewis in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

Moeves, a junior right-hander, allowed just one walk and upped his record to 2-3 this spring. Keith Jackson and Jason Nintrup each collected two hits to pace the Norse offensive attack.

In the nightcap, Josh Moulton went 3-for-4 as NKU coasted to a 7-5 win over the Flyers. Rick Wood (3-0) pitched seven innings and picked up the victory for the Norse, who took advantage of five Lewis errors to score four unearned runs.

Alex Frank scored two runs for NKU, which snapped a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth inning. Steve Thomas pitched out of a jam in the ninth inning to notch his third save of the season.

NKU improved to 10-10 overall, 7-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Lewis - which has lost 10 consecutive games - dropped to 4-26 overall, 2-16 in the GLVC.

NKU will play host to Lewis at noon Sunday as the teams conclude their four-game series at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex at Friendship Field.
