KENT, Ohio - Drew Saylor’s
two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Kent
State baseball team a 4-3 win over Northern Kentucky University
on Wednesday and a sweep of the doubleheader.
After NKU (8-10) took
a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh on a run-scoring single by
Keith Jackson, the Flashes loaded the bases with one out in the
bottom half. Saylor ended the game by hitting a ball over the head
of Alex Frank in center field for a walk-off two-run single off
reliever Steve Thomas (1-1).
Frank was 3-for-4 with
two RBI to lead the Norse offensive attack in the nightcap. Matt
Jones added two hits and scored three runs.
In the opener, the Flashes
(16-10) scored 11 unanswered runs to post an 11-3 win. NKU built
a 2-0 lead on home runs by Frank and Brad Meyer, but Kent State
responded by scoring the next 11 runs during the following four
innings.
Saylor tied the game
in the third with a two-run home run. The Flashes took the lead
with a three-run fourth inning. Andy Hargrove broke the tie with
a run-scoring double, and Joe Tucker hit a two-run double later
in the inning to give Kent State a 5-2 lead.
Saylor singled in a
run and Andrew Davis drove in two more during a five-run sixth to
put the game away.
Frank went 2-for-3 at
the plate for the Norse in the second game.
NKU will return home
this weekend and meet Lewis in a four-game series, beginning at
noon Saturday.
