MARION, Ill. – With
the aide of Sofie Rasmussen’s individual victory, the Northern
Kentucky University women’s golf team won the Great Lakes
Valley Conference championship for the third time in program
history.
The Norse (332-328=660)
blasted through the Kokopelli Golf Course on their way to a 10-stroke
victory over the second-place
Indianapolis
(343-327=670).
Rasmussen (78-82=160),
a junior from Randers, Denmark, pulled out a narrow victory over
Indianapolis’ Sarah Prascsak
(81-90=161) en route to winning the medal.
Rasmussen wasn’t
the only member of the Norse squad to bring home an award as
Alicia Stauffacher was awarded a spot
on the All-GLVC squad due to her season scoring average of 77.76
being one of the five best averages in the GLVC.
Stauffacher’s
average was just 0.33 away from being good enough for GLVC Player
of the Year honors, which went to Indy’s
Kristi Piepenbrick for a 77.44 average.
Daryl Landrum
will also be bringing home hardware of his own as the NKU head
coach was
voted GLVC Coach of the Year. Susan
Allen will be taking Freshman of the Year honors back to Drury
University with her 82.72 average score.
Rasmussen’s 16-over-par
performance highlighted an extremely strong team performance
that saw all five Norse golfers finish
in the top 21.
Alicia Lawrence
took home second place on the team as her 167 score was good
enough for a tie for 10 place.
Charity Evans
(14th place), Stauffacher (16th place) and Lyndsey Bevill (t-21st
place)
rounded out the championship winning squad.
Evans
shot a 169 (86-83) over the course of the two-day event, as
Stauffacher shot a 27-over par 171 (83-88) and Bevill finished
with a 31-over par 175 (94-81).
The victory
was the third of the season for the Norse and second at Kokopelli
GC. NKU won the
Midwest Shootout on Sept. 30-Oct.
1 by 13 strokes over Indianapolis. The third victory happened
just last weekend as the Norse took home the title at the Lewis
Aviator Classic in Lockport, Illinois’s Prairie Bluff GC.
The
Norse will now turn their sights at bring home a regional championship
as NKU look towards competing in the NCAA DII East
Regional at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich., on
May 5-7.
