BOWLING GREEN,
Ohio - Drew Harris and Janice Laker led the Northern Kentucky University
cross country teams to top-five finishes in the NCAA Division II/NAIA
division of the Mel Brodt Invitational held Saturday afternoon at
Forrest Creason Golf Course on the campus of Bowling Green State.
Harris finished in seventh place in the men’s race with a
time of 26:39.78 on the eight-kilometer course. Laker completed
the five-kilometer course with a time of 19:46.31, which was good
enough for a ninth-place finish.
Harris’
performance helped the NKU men finish third in the nine-team competition
while Laker’s effort helped the Norse to place fourth out
of the seven teams.
NKU’s
Matthew Shoulta placed ninth, 12 seconds behind Harris. Shoulta,
a graduate of Paducah St. Mary High School, was the second of three
Norse harriers to finish within 30 seconds of each other - freshman
Ben Foley hustled to a time of 27:05.41. Eddie Griffin (23rd) and
Ryne Smith (35th) completed the scoring for the Norse in the 93-runner
competition.
NKU earned third
place with 85 points. Ashland and Wayne State tied for first place
with 60 points, but the Eagles were awarded the win on a tie-breaker
- AU’s sixth-best competitor finished before WSU’s sixth-place
runner.
Despite finishing
in second place in both team standings, Wayne State captured both
first-place honors as Rachelle Mallette and Dan Kapadia won their
respective races.
For the NKU
women’s team, Jenna Siemer finished just over 17 seconds behind
Laker. Siemer, a graduate of St. Henry High School, achieved a time
of 20:03.64 and placed 16th despite the severe humidity in the area.
Findlay won
the women’s event with a score of 36, followed by Wayne State
(44), Spring Arbor (88) and NKU (95).
Jerrica Maddox
(21st), Tarah Cole (22nd), and Rose Morgan (28th) completed the
scoring for NKU in the 75-runner competition.
NKU will now
have a weekend off to prepare for the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational
in Chicago, Ill., on Sept. 27.
