KETTERING,
Ohio – Going into Saturday’s Dayton Flyer
5K, Northern Kentucky University cross country head coach Steve
Kruse thought that his team had a shot at winning both the men’s
and women’s college division races.
Kruse also figured the
Norse would have a runner finish high in the overall standings
against the field that included Division
I competitors.
The NKU men
took the college division title, but it was the performance of
Norse women’s
runner Julianne Hoekzema that was the story of the day.
Hoekzema finished an amazing race in 18:32 to take second
place overall and first in the college division. Hoekzema, a
graduated of Badin High School, finished more than a minute ahead
of the
runner-up in the college division as NKU finished second out
of three teams in its division.
The men’s
team completed a perfect score of 15 by placing the top five
runners
in the college bracket.
The Norse placed Adam
Stoppelwerth, Matt Shoulta, Keith Knapp, Zach Koehler and Drew
Harris in the top five.
Stoppelwerth, a senior from Erlanger, Ky.,
finished the five-kilometer race in a time of 15:56. The time
was good enough to edge Shoulta
by three seconds.
The Norse will return to the course next Saturday
as they co-host the Queen City Invitational in West Chester,
Ohio. Official start
time is set for 10 a.m. MEN'S RESULTS
