PENSACOLA, Fla.
- The Northern Kentucky University cross country teams had impressive
showings at the NCAA Division II pre-nationals on Saturday, with
both Norse squads posting second-place finishes against good competition.
The NKU women
just missed capturing first-place honors with a score of 61, one
point behind Tampa at the Escambia County Equestrian Center. Rose
Jepkirui took third place with a time of 22:31 to lead the Norse
in the five-kilometer event.
NKU's Julianne
Hoekzema finished fourth at 22:32, and teammate Jenna Siemer was
12th in 23:27. The Norse placed ahead of Alabama-Huntsville, which
is ranked 25th nationally in Division II.
NKU's men also
posted a second-place finish with a total of 72 in their six-kilometer
event. Harding (Ark.) - which is ranked No. 7 nationally in Division
II - won the team title with a score of 31, but NKU finished ahead
of squads such as 19th-ranked Florida Southern, host West Florida
and Tampa.
Zach Koehler
led NKU with a seventh-place finish in a time of 34:08. Keith Knapp
was 11th with a time of 34:31, and Matthew Shoulta finished 12th
in 34:32. The Norse's Brad Bullock posted a 16th-place finish with
a time of 35:05.
NKU will travel
to Edwardsville, Ill., on Oct. 7 for SIUE's Border Wars event. The
Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships are scheduled for Oct.
21 and will also be held at Edwardsville, Ill.
