About the Alternative Spring Break Program
What is the Alernative Spring Break Program?
Alternative Spring Break is an opportunity for NKU students to spend spring break in Mexico City learning about Mexican culture and doing volunteer work with various community programs.
What type of work do we do?
Most of the trip activities are coordinated by the YMCA of Mexico so much of the work we do is in YMCA run community development centers. The type of work varies but typically involves things such as painting, cleaning, and activities with the children at the camps.
Where do we stay?
We stay with host families living in Mexico city. Most of the host families have at least one college age child.
Are Spanish speaking skills required?
No it isn't necessary to be able to speak any Spanish to enjoy the trip. Some basic knowledge of Spanish is good to have, but translators are always available. If you don't speak Spanish you will be placed in a host family with at least one English speaking person.
Can anyone go on the trip?
Any NKU student in good academic standing is eligible to go on the trip regardless of major. Typically 10 to 13 students go on each trip.
Is there any time for tourism?
Yes, there is time for tourism on the trip. In 2008 the entire group visited the Teotihuacan Pyramids. There is also time for tourism with host families.
Do you get credit for going?
Yes, all participants in Alternative Spring Break enroll in INTL 300: International Service Learning which is a one credit pass/fail class. Outside of the trip there are a couple of in school meetings, but there are no actual classes required. Each student who attends will have to complete a small project such as doing a presenation, journal, or website for the trip.
