Picture of Rudy Garns As Director of Liberal Studies Programs, Dr. Brown provides oversight for the Master of Arts, the Bachelor of Arts, and the Associate of Arts degrees in Liberal Studies. He develops and implements policies shaping the programs, organizes marketing strategies, and assists students in securing advisors and committee members from across the University. The Founding Director of NKU’s Institute for Freedom Studies, Dr. Brown’s current work includes researching, writing, teaching, and consulting about the Underground Railroad. For the past five years he has extensively researched runaway slave ads as a way to develop an expandable, interactive database to study slavery and the Underground Railroad. Currently Dr. Brown actively helps to institutionalize the University’s new focus on civic engagement and community outreach. His teaching and research interests include the sociology of religion, the sociology of literature, race and ethnic relations, multicultural education, and cultural anthropology.
